A Guide To Settling Into A New Home

submitted on 10 March 2025
It is a strange experience when you move into a new home as it will feel completely different and it may take some time for you to settle and get your bearings. This is perfectly natural, but it is helpful to know a few ways that you can settle quickly so that you can speed up this process and get used to your surroundings and your new area. There are a few fantastic tips for turning a house into a home, getting settled into a new property and exploring your new neighbourhood, so read on for a few suggestions which should help if you have just moved or you have a move coming up.

Use A Reputable Removals Firm

For many people, the moving day can be stressful and chaotic. You can greatly reduce this stress by putting the removals in the hands of professionals as they will know exactly what they are doing and in many cases can handle all of the packing, loading and unloading for you. You can find the best companies by searching in your local area. If someone you know and trust has used a reliable removals firm, look up their name in Google e.g. All Moves Preston. Sourcing local companies means they're more likely to protect their reptuation - a bad job gets noticed and if their main customer base is local, that's not good for them.

Get To Know The Neighbours

It is a good idea to get to know the neighbours as soon as possible - ideally, this will be when you first view the property so that you can ask a few questions. It’s important to get to know the locals, especially the neighbours. It means that there are familiar faces when you arrive, which means it won’t be so intimidating. You may find that they can help you to get settled whether this is showing you around or simply lending a hand during moving day.

Unpack Straight Away

Although the moving day is stressful, it is hard to get settled into a new home if you are living out of boxes, so it is a smart move to unpack as soon as possible. This will also reduce stress so that you find it easier to relax when you are at home.

Have A Familiar Set Up

When unpacking your possessions, you might want to think about having a similar set up to what you had in your previous home. This will, of course, depend on the space that you are working with but you may find it comforting to have the same armchairs next to each other or the dining table in a similar position to how you had it previously.

Add Personality

It can feel strange living in a new house for a while, and it can take a long time for it to feel like your own. You can speed up this process by adding your personality wherever possible. This might include personal photographs, film posters, record collections, artwork, etc.

Spend Time At Home

It is much faster and easier to settle when you spend a significant amount of time in each room of the home. It is important to explore the local area, but you should also schedule time in just to enjoy being in your new home. This could include cooking your favourite meal in the kitchen, watching films, reading in bed and inviting your friends (and/or neighbours) round for a few drinks.

Get Out & Explore

It is also essential that you get out and explore so that you can get your bearings and soak up the atmosphere of the local area. This is also a good opportunity to meet a few of the locals and start to feel a part of the community.

Establish A Routine

Moving home will always cause disruption to your routine, but once the move is complete, you should try to get back to this as soon as possible and have it as close to your previous routine as you can. As creatures of habit, it can be strange and unsettling to disrupt the routine, so you are sure to feel more settled when you are getting up, eating and heading out the door at the same time each day.

Moving home is a strange experience to go through, and it can take a while to settle into a new house, particularly if you have been at the previous one for a long time. Hopefully, the above information will help you to get settled quickly and to turn the house into a home so that you can start this new chapter in your life and enjoy the excitement of living in your new found town.
