What is a Tree Survey and Why Should I Get One?
A tree survey is an in-depth audit that provides detailed insights into your tree's height, health, life expectancy and protection status. The survey may also be used as a point of reference by landscapers designing and building features in green spaces populated by trees.
Why Should I get a Tree Survey?
It is worth getting a tree survey if you are a home or landowner and planning to renovate your garden or green space. The survey's findings may help you to make informed decisions regarding your project, as well as ensuring you are operating safely and within the law.
What information will a tree survey provide?
A tree survey will typically include information on your trees':
- Age and species
- Dimensions (i.e. height and diameter)
- Health concerns (e.g. rot or fungal decay)
- Projected life expectancy
The survey will also determine whether any of the trees on your property are protected. Individual trees, or groups of trees may be subject to a TPO (Tree Preservation Order). These orders are typically administered by Local Planning Authorities to protect trees that are deemed to bring benefit to a local area.
They also make it a criminal offence to cut down, wilfully damage or destroy a tree without the authority's permission. So, if you're working in a conservation area and want to make sure you're operating on the right side of the law, requesting a tree survey before commencing work is highly recommended.
Who Will Carry Out My Tree Survey?
Tree surveys are usually carried out by trained arborists. These skilled professionals can quickly assess your trees" health, identify any problems and have a clear understanding of arboricultural legislation.
Before hiring an arborist, you should check that they are certified by the National Proficiency Test Council (NPTC). They should also operate within the BS 5837:2012 guidelines, which relate to best tree care practices and sustainability in planning and landscaping.
