Is appearance really important for an interview?submitted on 12 March 2019
Jobseekers after applying for jobs at jobsora.com or any other job websites, they have just one opportunity to impress the interviewers when they get invited for an interview. The first impression is very important and the looks are the main thing which employers consider when creating an impression of the jobseekers.
Looks during interviews
1. Hygiene
Nice clothes will be meaningless if they are won by a person who has not showered. A professional look begins with the best hygiene which encompasses everything that is done in order to look clean. This includes showering, brushing teeth and trimming nails.
Also, job seekers should enter the interview room smelling good besides looking clean. The pressure when being interviewed can make one sweat a lot. So, it is recommended to additionally ensure to apply deodorant or antiperspirant.
2. Grooming
Jobseekers must look presentable besides looking clean. Avoid using too much makeup and the hairstyle should be simple.
Face hair must be shaved and cleaned. And in case you have tattoos, make sure they are not visible and all facial piercings must be removed. Piercings and tattoos might actually make the interviewers have a negative opinion about a job seeker. The aim of grooming well is to show oneself as a presentable person and let the interviewer assess you as per what you speak and the qualifications which you possess and nothing more.
3. Dress to impress
There is a dressing code in most organizations and employees are supposed to adhere to it. A dressing code is a description of what can be won and what cannot be won to work.
Jobseekers should at least research about the company and see what their dress code is. It is recommended to dress better than the specified dress code. For instance, if a company specifies business casual, the jobseekers should wear suits on the day of the exercise.
Other jobs like retail jobs require people to wear uniforms. So, wearing a dress shirt and some good pair of pants to an interview can be appropriate.
However, no matter what you put on, ensure that your outfit is neat and properly ironed. Jobseekers must again note that interviews are not the right moments to show off their beautiful ornaments. Just like the makeup and hairdo, they must keep their jewelry simple. Earrings, a wedding ring for those who are married and a watch are the recommended additions to have on the day of an interview.
4. Body language
This is how people carry themselves. It is part of one’s physical looks and it says so much about an individual, his/her thoughts and even mood. Jobseekers should ensure that what they do during an interview is related to the message they want to pass.
For instance, if you want to look confident ensure to shake the interviewer’s hand firmly when greeting him/her.
Jobseekers are also supposed to look relaxed so that the employer will not think that they are nervous. Avoid moving too much and it is not good to use gestures while talking.
Another important thing is smiling. This is the thing which can prove that one is cordial and that he/she is comfortable with that interview.
It is great to also show that you are attentive. Ensure you sit upright and the feet must be relaxing on the floor. For the hands, you can fold them on the table in a comfortable manner.
Conclusion
Looks are not the right method for judge people’s character but it is natural for interviewers to judge from what they see. But there is more into appearing presentable and the above are the things which job seekers should focus on when preparing for interviews.
