Brush Cutter - A Must Have Skid Steer Attachment

submitted on 25 June 2019
The last 10 years, skid steers have evolved from just being a way to dig and move dirt around into one of the best all-around construction tools on the job site. One application that has become popular is brush cutting or land clearing with a skid steer. Using a skid steer with a brush cutter attachment just makes sense. This powerful setup allows the operator to cut long grass in large fields like a lawn mower or for lot clearing heavy brush and trees.

Skid steer brush cutters come in different sizes depending on the material you wish to cut. The most important part of the equation to determine which brush cutter will run best with your skid loader is to find out your machine’s auxiliary hydraulic flow gallons per minute (GPM). Typically, a standard flow skid steer has a flow rate between 16-26 GPM. A high flow machine has a flow rate of 27-45 GPM. This is important since you will need to decide whether to purchase a standard flow brush cutter or a high flow brush cutter. An advantage of a standard flow vs high flow cutter is the fact that running on standard flow, you will not overheat your hydraulic fluid while there is a chance of this happening while running a high flow unit.

Once you know your machine’s gallons per minute specifications, you then need to decide how thick material you wish cut through. The larger the material you wish to cut, the higher the cost of the brush cutter. The reason for this should be obvious, however I will break down the differences in brush cutters we offer.

There are two different styles of brush cutters. A closed front brush cutter and a open front brush cutter. The differences between the two are not complicated, basically the closed front brush cutter has to be angled up from front to back in order to expose the blade for large material cutting. The open front always has the blades exposed allowing the operator to drive the unit into a tree and easily slice through it. The open front style also allows the unit to cut larger diameter material.

For mini skid steers such as Vermeer, Bobcat MT’s, and Ditch Witch, we offer a Blue Diamond Closed Front and Open Front Brush Cutters. These brush cutters run on a lower flow rate starting at 13 GPM and all the way up to 26 GPM. The closed front model will cut up to 3” material while the open front will cut up to 4” material. These attachments are great for maintaining park trails and cutting in tight areas.

The next size up would be the Blue Diamond Heavy Duty Brush Cutter. This cutter is only available in closed front. It can be purchased in either a 60” or 72” cut width. It will cut material up to 4” material and is powered by a geroler style motor. This unit is perfect for cutting long green grass with a mix of small sapling trees. This unit is only available in standard flow running between 16-26 GPM.

Our more commercial units start with the Blue Diamond Extreme Duty Brush Cutters. This unit is available in both closed front and open front models. The difference between the two is the cutting capacity. With the closed front brush cutter cutting up to 6” material and the open front cutting up to 8” material. Both are available in 60” or 72” cut widths. The 60” widths have a 3 blade carrier while the 72” have a 4 blade carrier. Both are available in either standard or high flow.

Lastly, the most aggressive skid steer brush cutter in our lineup is the Blue Diamond Severe Duty Brush Cutter. This cutter has a specialty made Italian piston driven motor. This unit will cut material up to 10”-12” in diameter. This unit is very efficient sending all of its available torque to the blade carrier. The Severe Duty Brush Cutter is available in standard flow and high flow. It is only available in the open front design, giving the operator the most aggressive performance available.
