Maximising Space in Your Guest Roomsubmitted on 26 March 2015
If you have a guest room that is, for the majority of the time, under-utilised, it can be difficult not to cast the space a look of annoyance whenever you pass it by, especially if the rest of your home is somewhat lacking in the space department. Spare rooms shouldn't simply be made-up as a place for guests to stay - doing so would be a very inefficient use of space - and instead should be multi-purpose storage and guest areas. Here's how you can combine the two:
Get Rid Of Clutter
This is a really obvious tip, but one that most people end up forgetting. If you have a huge number of old items and other assorted tat laying around, get rid of them! You probably don't currently or never will need them, and if you have things of worth, selling them on eBay or at a car boot sale could be a great way to make a little cash!
Beds
When it comes to space-saving sleep furniture, there are two main types of bed you should be aiming to acquire; Ottoman beds or pull-out divans. Ottoman beds feature storage located underneath the mattress itself, so are good for storing items you rarely use, whilst pull-out divans are settee styled beds that usually take the form on a single bed size, but contain a second single frame and mattress hidden underneath that can be pulled out, effectively turning the single bed into a double. You can get some pretty cheap deals here at Bedstar, and in doing so you'll hugely boost the floor and storage spaces in the room.
Living Cube
A more out of the ordinary way to maximise space, the Living Cube, designed by Till Ewert Könneker, is an intriguing way of combining a variety of requirements within one elegant solution. The Cube contains very large storage areas for clothes, shoes and miscellaneous items, comes fit with an entertainment centre, and also features a sleeping space located above the designated storage areas. Now you wouldn't necessarily have to include the sleeping space atop the Cube (it's quite a long fall if your guest frequently rolls over in their sleep!), instead using this upper area as another space for storage.
Forget The Extras
You don't need to pop a desk, dressing cabinet or set of drawers in your guest room. Even if someone was visiting for a long while, which is unlikely, they don't really need all of the extraneous details to make their stay a pleasant one. All those furnishings are doing is detracting from the amount of precious storage space available!
From small ideas, big areas of space can be created.
