Lawn Care Made Simple - 6 Tips for a Beautiful Lawn

submitted on 14 July 2016
There is nothing quite like a beautiful lawn that is lush and green. But anyone who has ever had to maintain one knows that there can be a lot of work involved. From the moment you plant the seed or lay sod, it can be a never ending battle keeping it from being overrun with weeds and free from pests that seem to find your yard the best feeding ground in the neighborhood. If you are intent on having the loveliest lawn on the block, here are 6 tips that will help. 1. Mowing – When and How
One of the major mistakes many homeowners make is to let their grass go too long in between mowing. It is far better to mow your lawn more often than to let it grow long and then try to do it all in one shot. The best advice in a situation like this would be to make several passes from different directions, going a bit shorter with each pass. 2. Watering
To keep your lawn green and lush, it is suggested that you water it regularly and quite often. Most people find that watering early in the morning and late in the evening prevents burning from the strong rays of the sun. Water beads act like prisms and as the strong mid-day sun hits the droplets they are reflected and can actually burn tiny holes in the grass.

3. Fertilizing
When you’ve mowed your lawn, the one thing you may not be aware of is that you are taking nutrients away with each bit you cut. It becomes necessary to fertilize your lawn periodically to put the nutrients back into the grass and there are several really great products on the market. To learn how to apply and how often you should fertilize your lawn, carefully read the package. Each product is different so you will need to follow the manufacturer’s instructions.

4. Pest Control
There are a number of insects and little critters that can wreak untold damage on your beautiful lawn that you’ve worked so hard on. Most of the time a layperson isn’t able to identify exactly what kind of bug or little animal is doing the damage so it really pays to have a professional pesticide company in to make an evaluation of the damage and to treat it with the proper pest control products. Treating your lawn with the wrong pesticides can be as harmful as the pests you are trying to control.

5. Weed Control
Weed control is yet another major problem for homeowners who want to maintain a lovely lawn. There are quite a few ‘weed & feed’ type products on the market that you can get from your local hardware store or lawn and garden center. Many homeowners choose to keep a weed and feed type product on hand that takes care of the fertilizing as mentioned above and weed control that is vital to a lush, green lawn. However, there are some homeowners and professionals who steer clear of combination products, opting instead for one each of a fertilizer and a weed killer.

6. Aerification
Of all the tips that can help you accomplish that heavenly lawn you’ve been dreaming of, aerification may be the least known trick. A stiff tined rake would do the job quite nicely. It is suggested that you simply make a pass of your lawn pressing the stiff tines down into the soil. This allows the roots to get the oxygen they so need in order to maintain healthy growth. Whether you are looking to add curb appeal to your home for a quick sale or simply want a lawn you can be proud of, these six tips for a beautiful lawn can help you grow the lushest, greenest grass imaginable.
