How You Can Effectively Make Use of Artwork to Enhance Your Living Area

submitted on 7 April 2019
Artwork can definitely give your space the personality it needs; it adds depth and character to your living area which no other element can. But whilst it's relatively easy to choose and place furniture around your living space, artwork can be another matter altogether. This is particularly true if you don't consider yourself an art expert or are using artwork for the first time to enhance your space. It is essential to select the right pieces of artwork so you can effectively complement your home's scheme and design. But apart from this, you should choose artwork which complements your own personal aesthetics as well. Additionally, selecting the right artwork is one thing, but displaying it in the proper way is another thing completely. Here, then, is how you can effectively make use of artwork to enhance your living area.

Choosing it: your guide
When it comes to choosing artwork, you don’t have to go for the most expensive. There is a variety of printed artwork on the market today, and these come from reputable galleries and well-known artists as well. You can easily source fine art online depending on your preference, be it early modern, old masters, contemporary, post-war, and more.

One aspect you should carefully consider, though, is the colour since it sets the room's mood. When you are selecting artwork, choose colours which bring out the room's beauty and give it a spacious feel. Another aspect is the type of artwork and its size. Artwork can refer to pictures or prints, sculptures, and more. But if you choose a print to hang on your wall, be sure to check its dimensions. For artwork over a bed or in a living room, one general principle is to go with something more substantial. But you can also go for smaller frames hung in an artistic manner; the aim, after all, is to enhance the room's look and feel.

Hanging it: your guide
Hanging your artwork takes some careful consideration as well. First, you have to measure the length and width of both the frame and your wall and make sure the nails are positioned correctly. You should also think about the artwork's weight; if it is heavy, it's best to use sturdier nails. Also, the artwork's height is essential. Make sure to centre it properly and behind your coffee table, bed, or sofa. The artwork should also be at eye level, which is around 58 inches from the floor. But the artwork's height will also depend on your furniture's position, so make sure there is some distance between your furniture and where you hang your frame.

Another consideration is the spacing. If you are planning to hang more than one piece of artwork on a wall, make sure there is space in between each piece so you can avoid a cluttered look. If you are planning to make an artwork or print wall, you want the pieces to be positioned properly throughout the entire wall with each piece equidistant from the other.
