How To Easily Rejuvenate Your Kitchen

submitted on 21 April 2018
Have you moved into a new home and seen the kitchen hasn’t had a makeover for years? Have you been promising to update your kitchen for a long time but didn’t have the time or the finances to do it? Regardless of the reason, a kitchen renovation can work wonders in any household or living space. However, you don’t have to rip all of the old cupboards out and start again. You can use some of the quick and clever methods mentioned below to revamp your space easily.

Take a Step Back
Before you can start to change your kitchens look, you need to think about where you want to change. There may be elements of the kitchen that you like and don’t want to change. Sit down in your kitchen and take a good look around. Even though you may spend a lot of time in there, you might not have noticed something before. See if there are any obvious areas that you want to change or any areas you definitely want to keep. It will give you the best possible place to start making changes. Make a plan so that you don’t forget and make sure anyone else working in your kitchen knows about the list and follows it in case you aren’t there.

Do Some Research
When you have thought about what you want to change, you need to do your research. Take a look through some magazines or go online and see what looks you like. The best part is that you can mix and match anything you like or create your own theme. Research the furniture in the kitchen to see if you like any of the designs or if you will keep them as they are. Another area that you might want to change is the worktops. You could look for alternatives such as granite worktops or real wood. You should also be looking at the cost of the materials, as you can make your kitchen look amazing without spending a lot of money, but sometimes there are features that are worth investing in to get the best effect.

Recycle or Sell
When you start to clean out your kitchen ready to be rejuvenated, think about the things you are discarding. Instead of simply throwing them away, perhaps there are other ways you can use them? If you do decide to remove items from your home, for example, if you have some old plates that you no longer use, why not give them to a local charity shop. They can then be of use to someone else who doesn’t have any. The same applies to other kitchen appliances or furniture, look to see if you can donate them or sell them on. It can help you to raise some money for your kitchen project or help those less fortunate.

Kitchen Cabinets
One of the main parts of your kitchen is your cabinets. They take up the most space, and they hold all the essentials you need such as food, utensils, and appliances. It means that of all the things in your kitchen, your cabinets are what you are most likely to want to look the best. There are a few options open to you when it comes to the look of your cabinets; firstly, you can remove the doors altogether and replace them with new ones. Although this is the costliest option, it will give you a great new look without having to remove the whole cupboard. The next option is to paint them; you can do this easily as long as you are happy with the shape of the doors. You want a paint that will adhere to the surface of the doors and won’t scrape off easily. If you have real wood doors, then you can sand them down ready for painting. If they are other materials, you might need to paint them with a primer before you start. Another option is to cover them with a sticky-backed plastic; they come in a range of colours and patterns, so you can choose the one you want. They are fairly easy to use, you just need to make sure you don’t get any air bubbles when you put it on.

Appliances
Rejuvenating your kitchen is the perfect time to be thinking about your larger appliances. Most people keep their washing machine in their kitchen, mainly because there aren’t many other options. However, if you haven’t already, you might want to install a dishwasher as well. You can get them in various sizes depending on the room you have; the best ones are the full-sized, as you don’t need as many washes. There are slimline versions that are ideal for the smaller kitchen as well as smaller kitchen top versions. The only issue with the kitchen top versions is that you will be taking up valuable worktop space. Flooring
The flooring in your kitchen is also a big factor when it comes to the look of the room. You want something that will complement the worktops and the cabinets, and not overpower them. Many people go for a stone tile in the kitchen, because it is easy to clean, and it is durable. However, there are other types of flooring that will work just as well. For example, you can use a real wood flooring in your kitchen, although you will need to make sure it is water resistant. You can also use laminate flooring, though again it needs to be water resistant or it will start to warp and come apart. Vinyl flooring is also a popular choice; it has the advantage of being one of the easier types of flooring to lay, it is also durable and can be easily cleaned.

Walls
In a kitchen, your walls are more functional than in other rooms in the house, that’s because you use them to attach kitchen cupboards, hang pots and pans and put up boards. However, that doesn’t mean that it isn’t important to choose the right colour. You can also use any space you have left to hang pictures or artwork that you like. The area just above your worktops should be tiled if possible as that area can get dirty while you are preparing food. It is especially the case around the cooker and the sink area. You can let your imagination flow with your tiles and have them create a nice pattern. It can be a nice feature piece, especially if you have the walls white or another neutral colour.

Add an Island or Breakfast Bar
If you are short of space in the house, then having an area in the kitchen where you can prepare food and eat can be useful. An island is a great way to gain additional storage and worktop area, and in most kitchens, it won’t get in the way. The size of the island you have depends on the amount of free space you have.

Shelving
Shelves can be a great way to get access to things quickly without having to hunt around in the cupboard. Things like spices, dry foods like pasta and herbs are used quite often, so having them on display can be useful. To make it look better, put these ingredients into smart looking jars that all look the same, you can then label them accordingly and display them on the shelves. Another way you can display things is with hooks, these can be particularly useful for pots and pans, especially if they are too large to fit into the cupboards. You can even hang some utensils that you use most often. Containers
Although some people prefer a lot of cupboards, they might still want to have certain things on display and easy to reach. That is why containers are a great way to keep many things in the kitchen. If you don’t have any shelves, then you can use the back of the worktop to place jars and other containers. You might want to do this with the tea and coffee making things and place them near to the kettle. Cookery books are also often kept on display, but if you don’t have any shelves, then you can keep them in a cupboard or a container on the worktop.

Lighting
When it comes to lighting, you need to be able to see what you are doing. For that reason, your main light needs to be bright and functional. You want to avoid spotlights as the main light as they can often create dark areas in the kitchen. You can incorporate more subtle lighting by having lights under the top cupboards so the shine onto the work surface. It gives you the light you need while still being atmospheric at the same time, though you need to ensure that it will illuminate the areas you need.

It can be a lot of fun rejuvenating a kitchen, especially if you already have an idea in mind. Remember to do your research and try to stick to your budget.
