Concrete Mix and Liquid Screed Comparison

submitted on 9 October 2019
For someone who does not know the construction industry, distinguishing between liquid screed and concrete may be difficult. Since both have the same primary ingredient, which is cement, it is easy to conclude that there is not much difference. Indeed, the process of creating a liquid screed mixture and cement mix begins with the same steps. Cement, water, and aggregate are combined to form a homogenous mixture.

But, what distinguishes liquid screed from an ordinary cement mix is the aggregate. Liquid screed uses a finer aggregate, which results in a smoother mixture. Liquid screed also contains more water than the cement mixture. Let us compare further the properties of liquid screed and cement mixture to determine their suitable applications.

Underfloor heating compatibility
Underfloor heating is a popular addition in many homes today. It is an energy-efficient option if you want to stay warm during winter. Liquid screed is more compatible with water under floor heating. Since screed can be applied in a thin layer, it allows heat to radiate evenly. Concrete mix, on the other hand, is too thick to be used for underfloor heating.

Durability and strength
A concrete mix typically contains bigger aggregates; hence, making the hardened mixture stronger. Concrete is suitable for all types of construction, and its strength makes it versatile for different surfaces. Concrete is also flame-resistant, which is why it is used as a base in walls and floors.

The hardened surface of liquid screed is smoother, but also durable. While liquid screed is not commonly used for walls, ceilings, or other vertical applications, it is, however, best used as a base for floor finishing. Screed enhances the performance and overall appearance of whichever flooring you choose to install.

Resistance to cracking
Although concrete is strong and durable, one of its weaknesses is susceptibility to cracking. Many contractors do not recommend using concrete as the base for flooring. The concrete mix also tends to shift and shrink more; thus, resulting in uneven flooring. On the other hand, liquid screed does not crack. The hardened surface is smoother and more even. Liquid screed is also less likely to shrink or shift after drying.

Suitability for DIY
DIY construction is quite popular these days. A concrete mix application is straightforward and simple. With the right tools, you can apply concrete mix over walls or flooring without much difficulty. Liquid screed application, to some extent, may be done through a DIY application. However, there are several essential preparation steps, especially if you are pouring screed over a concrete base.

While screed application may be more complicated, it is possible to complete a satisfactory DIY application over a small area.

Availability of professional contractors
If you prefer to work with a professional contractor, it is easy to find someone who is an expert in working with concrete. With liquid screed, there are also many reputable contractors available since using liquid screed is common in the UK. When choosing a contractor, find a company with years of experience and versatility when working with different types of screed and methods of application.
