5 Tips for Taking Better Care of Your Boilersubmitted on 15 October 2017
It is easy to forget about your boiler. And when it is working properly it is natural to take it for granted. But when you care for it better you get better service and better efficiency in return. And you also minimise the risk that the boiler will break down unexpectedly. Fortunately there are a few simple things you can do to make sure that you are looking after your boiler so that you get the most out of this essential piece of equipment.
1. Get an Annual Service
Many people never get their boiler serviced, which is a mistake since to keep a boiler running properly it needs to have a regular service with a qualified plumber. An annual maintenance check will look at how the boiler is running, and will correct any issues that could cause problems now or in the future. You are much less likely to need an emergency boiler replacement when you have the machine serviced on a regular basis.
2. Make Sure It’s Clean
A boiler also collects dust and grime, and this can build up over time making the boiler work less efficiently. It is important to make sure that you clear away grime and dust from the settings and the controls, but do not try and clean the inside of the boiler. If you think that build-up of grime and dirt has made the boiler run less efficiently then you need to get a plumber to do a thorough check and a clean out of the interior.
3. Bleed the Radiators
When your radiators are working more efficiently, the boiler in turn works more efficiently. Bleeding your radiators simply means opening a valve and releasing trapped air that could be causing the radiators to heat unevenly. Unless there are other problems with your radiators it is a task you can carry out yourself.
4. Check the Boiler Pressure
A boiler needs to operate under the correct pressure in order to work efficiently. If the pressure is too low the boiler will not be very efficient. You can make a difference to the pressure of a boiler by making a few simple adjustments, or you can ask a plumber to do this for you.
5. Fit Carbon Monoxide Monitors
While it is not a tip directly related to the functioning of your boiler, it is important to get carbon monoxide detectors fitted since these will alert you to any leak that causes carbon monoxide to get into your home. This is obviously a real health danger so carbon monoxide detectors are a must whether your gas boiler is old or new.
