5 Reasons You Need to Give Your Office a Makeover

submitted on 31 March 2018
If you are going to be spending up to 40 hours a week in a workspace, you want it to be pleasant to the eye, comfortable and reflective of you and your business. If your décor is looking a little tired, your PC’s or Mac’s are a tad outdated, and you’re fed up of sitting on the same chair, it might be time to give your office a makeover! A makeover needn’t break the bank or be a long, time-consuming task, below are a few great reasons to put your hand in your pocket and give your office the love and attention it deserves:

It Will Give a New Lease of Life for Your Office
By choosing the right colour schemes, you can give your office a funky, vibrant look, which is great for creative industries and young start-ups! Or, you could opt for a smooth, sophisticated finish. Saturated colours such as dark reds and greens inspire trust and confidence, two terms that will definitely give your office the boost it needs. Make sure you do plenty of research to ensure you make the right choices in paint, furniture and fittings. When the makeover is complete, you want your office to sing, and for it to inspire confidence in you.

A few ideas on what you could invest your makeover money include plants and water features to create a warm, inviting atmosphere for clients and staff members alike. If you have carpets that are looking a little worn and dated, you could update to laminated wooden flooring or anti slip vinyl flooring to bring some life back to your office.

It’s a Great Team Building Exercise
Team building exercises (including staff day/nights out) are costly and not always as effective as you would like them to be. There are team members who might take a backseat and not get involved, or not turn up at all. You can eliminate all of those issues, and save yourself money in the process, by turning your office makeover into a team-building exercise.

You could incorporate your makeover plans into your team meetings so that you can get the opinions of your staff members from the beginning of the process. You never know, you could have a budding architect or grand designs expert on the payroll and you didn’t realise! If you’re closing the office for a day of painting, why not bring your team on board and ask them to help? You can buy them lunch to show your appreciation, and they will respect the fact that you have involved them in the task and you value their opinion and support, which, in turn, will boost the morale of the entire office.

It Gives a Great Impression to Your Clients
When it comes to clients, first impressions are everything. Think about every time you have walked into an office. Whether it’s for a job interview, a meeting or a networking session, you will have made assumptions about that business based on the look, the décor, the cleanliness and anything else that catches the eye. With that in mind, it’s essential that you consider your clients first impressions of your business when piecing together you makeover plans.

A useful way to do this is to pick a theme and stay consistent with it throughout. If you are going modern art deco with your office makeover, it will be jarring to your client if you ask them to take a seat on a sofa from the 1970s that has no business being in your office. The same rules apply if you’re going for a retro theme. Consistency will give a great first impression and show your clients that you know what you’re doing.

It Can Increase the Productivity of Your Team
Your makeover is likely to have a positive effect on the productivity of your team. Whether you’re decking out your office with new computers and gadgets that will literally help them get more work completed during their working day, or simply by giving them that boost of adrenaline that comes from stepping into a new and improved working environment. From a new lick of paint to brand-new chairs and desks, positivity almost always translates to increased productivity.

A great way to cater to your staff members needs while improving productivity is to ask your team for suggestions as to what you could do to help make their working day more productive. For example, you could have staff who are struggling with carpal tunnel syndrome who would benefit from wrist-supporting mouse-mats, or the chairs in the office at present are causing back pain. Perhaps the current lighting is too low, creating eye strain when focusing on a bright computer screen.

These are all issues that could be eradicated by consulting your team and asking them to be open and honest. You can then factor this feedback into your makeover plans and truly get the best out of your team members.

It Promotes a Positive Image of Your Business
You can utilise your makeover to give your business a positive image. For example, you could use hand-crafted furniture made by local businesses to show that you support local tradespeople, or focus your attention on making your office as eco-conscious as possible, from lighting to recycling bins and more, so that potential clients will see that you care about something else other than making money. You care about the planet as well as needs of your customers.

Whatever reasons you have for having an office makeover, it’s important to utilise social media and your website to showcase the work you have put in. Put some before-and-after pics on Instagram. Blog about the makeover on your website and Facebook to show what a strong team you are and how much work you’ve put in. Why not ask your Twitter and Pinterest followers to give suggestions and tips on décor and furniture? An office makeover is a great marketing tool, so make the most of it - before and after the paint dries.
