12 Ways to Make Your Bathroom Both Look and Feel Bigger

submitted on 30 March 2018
Luxurious bathrooms not only feature beautiful bathtubs, stylish sinks, and chic bathroom fixtures, but they also offer plenty of freedom to move. However, if your bathroom is lacking in extra space, there are many visual tricks you can use to make the room appear, and feel, larger than it really is. Here are 12 ways to transform your bathroom into a place to wow.

1.Create an Airy Space with White-on-White
If you want your room to appear spacious and airy, you should consider using white-on-white across the bathroom. This means you should use white paint, white tiles, white bathroom furniture and so on. It is a colour that naturally recedes, as it reflects any available natural or artificial light, rather than absorbing it. Of course, you might be worried about the room lacking character or appearing clinical when using too much white, which is why you should incorporate textural elements into the décor, such as pale stone, moulding, fabric accents and tiles. Wood and metallic accessories can also add charm to the space while allowing the room to offer a seamless interior design.

2.Choose a Tone-on-Tone Interior
Are you not a fan of a white-on-white bathroom? Choose a tone-on-tone interior design palette instead, such as soft greys, warm beiges or powder blues. For example, you can choose a tile that offers a beautiful design and pick out different coloured hues from it to incorporate into your interior design. This can create a spacious, spa-like experience, as it can provide visual breaks to make the room appear bigger than it is.

3.Add a Sliding Shower Door Few experiences are more luxurious than a hot shower, which can make you feel squeaky clean and refreshed. Yet, your shower design of choice could potentially be compromising on space within your bathroom. If you want to move across the bathroom with ease each day, you should consider installing a stylish sliding shower door, so it will never crash into the sink or toilet as you step out. Learn more about the types of bathroom shower door designs that can increase space and enhance style across your bathroom.

4.Hang a Large Mirror
Mirrors not only help you improve your appearance, as they can also expand space within your bathroom. In fact, hanging a large mirror could help you to visually double the size of your bathroom, as they can naturally reflect light to make a room appear much bigger than it is. A large mirror in a beautiful frame can also add drama and personality into your interior design, which can become a focal point that will impress your guests.

5.Install a Floating Vanity
If your bathroom is a little cramped on space, it can be challenging to find room for your bathroom furniture and storage. A floating vanity might, therefore, be the ideal solution, as it will provide you with plenty of storage space for your daily essentials, and it also won’t take up any square footage space, so the bathroom will appear airy and open.

6.Create Longer Lines
It doesn’t matter if your bathroom is oddly shaped or a typical rectangle. There is often one wall of a room that is much longer, which you can emphasise using longer lines. Long elements can elongate the space of a room to make it appear wider. Draw the eye to the widest point within the bathroom with a long shelf, moulding chair rail, or band of tile.

7.Add Bright Lighting
Bathrooms do not commonly welcome much natural light, which can make them appear dark and cramped. Artificial lighting is your friend when attempting to open the space, so it looks and feels bigger to both you and your guests. So, add recessed lighting, vanity lights, sconces, or you could even install a skylight to welcome natural sunlight. Try to use a combination of all the lighting elements to create a bright, open space to enjoy a spacious, luxurious bathroom you’ll never want to leave.

8.Less is More in a Bathroom
Stuffing your bathroom with storage and accessories will make it appear and feel smaller than it needs to. Try to leave as much open space as possible to make it look roomy and luxurious. So, only add items to the floating vanity and store bathroom items, such as towels and cleaning supplies, in other storage areas across the home.

9.Paint Your Bathroom Ceiling in Your Primary Wall Colour
Does your ceiling feature oddly-shaped low areas or an angled design? If so, you would be wise to paint your ceiling in your bathroom wall’s primary colour – or in a slightly lighter shade. Doing so can ultimately help the weird angles and areas to disappear, as the colour will help to unify the interior design, which can ultimately help to expand the space visually. Cutting down the design transitions can create a more expansive, cleaner space.

10.Install a Light-Coloured Floor
Similar to your bathroom walls, a light-coloured floor can visually expand a bathroom’s size. Choose a colour that complements your wall colour to create an elegant bathroom that oozes style, sophistication and space. If you cannot replace your existing bathroom flooring, add a light-coloured bathroom rug onto the floor to transform the interior design.

11.A Wall-Mounted Sink
Create a roomier bathroom by investing in a wall-mounted sink, which will offer you more freedom to move across the room. It can also open up the square feet of your bathroom, which can highlight the shape and size of a room.

12. Remove Anything that Sticks Out
If an item of furniture or accessory sticks out in your bathroom, it can attract the eye and can seemingly shrink the size of the room. Walk into your bathroom and try to identify if anything is sticking out, and imagine if the bathroom would appear much more significant without the object. If it would, it's time to remove it from your bathroom altogether to increase the illusion of space across the room.
