Weekend DIY Garden Landscaping Ideassubmitted on 2 March 2017
The weekend is a good time to relax and chill out after a hectic week at work, but if you are type who needs a project to feel fulfilled, spending a bit of time in the garden could be just the ticket.
With summer just around the corner, now is an excellent time to start thinking about how you can improve your garden. If your outdoor space is lacking in personality and structure, here are a few ideas to get you started. You should be able to tackle these in a weekend, so roll up your sleeves and let’s get started!
A Garden within a Garden
A traditional English garden usually has a lawn surrounded by borders. This works well if you have kids and pets, but if you want to see something a bit different when you gaze out of the window, it’s time to start landscaping.
Use paving stones to build a patio where you can relax and dine outdoors. Laying a patio is a weekend DIY project. You can buy paving stone from any DIY outlet or infinitepaving.com. Paving is available to suit all budgets, so pick the style that suits your wallet and garden. Remember, natural stone looks beautiful and is hardwearing, but it’s expensive, whereas Indian stone is a cheaper alternative.
Edging stones and gravel are great for delineating different sections of a garden. Use edging stones to mark out planted areas and pathways, and fill in the gaps with gravel, wood chippings and slate. As long as you use weed membrane, you can plant between loose gravel and chippings without fear of a weed explosion.
Constructing Pathways
It’s common to see bald patches where we walk to the washing line or shed. Build a pathway along these areas. Use gravel or paving stones and your pathway will look attractive as well as being useful. Alternatively, use cut down old sleepers to mark your pathway and fill in the gaps with gravel.
Container Gardening
Containers are a quick and easy way to add colour to a garden. You will find a huge range of ceramic and plastic containers for sale at your local garden centre or DIY outlet, but if you have more time, make your own. Use old pallets to create funky planters and then decorate them with any spare paint you have lying around. Line your containers with plastic sheeting (with some holes for drainage) and fill them up with compost. Now you are ready to plant them with colourful flowers.
Create a Wildlife Pond
Ponds are easy to build, but they do require maintenance and can be expensive if you start looking at pumps. An alternative is to create a pond that attracts local wildlife, but doesn’t require much maintenance. To do this, dig out a shallow area of garden and line it with plastic sheeting. Fill it with water, add some water-loving plants, and wait for frogs to set up home.
Have fun in your garden this weekend. Adding a few personal touches is more than a labour of love – it may even add value to your home!
