Great Eras in Design to Be Familiar With

submitted on 8 January 2015
When it comes to renovating and decorating, you have lots of options that can transform any space. There are many examples of how furniture and décor can completely transform the simplest spaces into amazing works of art themselves.

But, how do you know what’s right for you?

Should you buy Victorian skirting boards for your new look?

Should you go Edwardian in style?

Or is Georgian the way to go?

In order to know, it’s best to familiarise yourself with the basics of different periods in architecture and design, making it easier to know what suits your own style best. Here is some basic info on three of the most influential periods in architecture and design: Victorian, Edwardian, and Georgian.

Victorian
Victorian style refers to a movement in architecture and design occurring during the reign of queen Victoria, roughly 1830 to 1910. A combination of French, Italian, Tudor, and some Egyptian ideas, Victorian style is all about ornamentation. 2 part skirting boards were the norm for example.

Orderliness is also a key component of Victorian design. One aspect from this period that today’s homeowners can use to improve their living spaces is the idea of separation. Victorian style very carefully separates public from private, focusing on parlours that showcase great objects reflecting the home’s owner for everyone who would come to visit.

Edwardian A common critique of Victorian styles is that they led to a lot of clutter both on the house and within. For someone looking for a classic style that might be a bit cleaner and less overwhelming, Edwardian styles could be the perfect solution. From the end of the Victorian era and sometimes considered to have lasted until the beginning of World War I, Edwardian architecture and design aesthetics focused on the use of color. Wallpaper and curtains were made with less patters, looking plainer in some ways.

Georgian The Guardian features great examples of Georgian architecture and style. Lasting from 1720 to 1830, this vast period refers to a lot of developments in architecture and style. With Georgian styles, there is an emphasis on neoclassicism, drawing inspiration from classical Greece. For interiors, it’s defined by moldings and facades that add classical touches, harmony in the use of space, quiet colors, and stucco orientation. Those looking to spruce up their interiors with something classically elegant can look to the designers and architects of this fascinating and influential period for inspiration.

When you are redesigning your home, look for examples from these classic eras and then ways to make them your own. This DIY approach to interior decorating will save you money and make the process so much more enjoyable. You can also mix and match to create something entirely new, such as creating one style with a more cluttered, ornate Victorian approach, one room that follows the simpler aspects of Edwardian, and throw classic moldings or touches everywhere to reference Georgian architecture. Additionally, these certainly aren’t the only periods that have had an influence on design. Start your own research and build your personal style and taste out of the classics to create something modern and uniquely you.
